7-Day Sahara Nomadic Trek | Eco Desert Trekking to Erg Chigaga

The 7-Day Nomadic Eco-Trekking Expedition is a slow-travel journey from Agadir into the living heart of the Sahara, designed for travelers seeking authentic trekking, cultural immersion, and responsible desert exploration. Traveling through the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the lush Drâa Valley, the journey gradually transitions from palm-filled oases and ancient kasbahs to the vast, silent landscapes of the Sahara, where walking becomes the true way forward.

Guided by local nomads, you spend several days trekking alongside camels across dunes, fossil plains, and remote desert corridors, following ancestral routes shaped by centuries of desert life. Nights are spent in wild bivouacs and eco-conscious camps, sharing tea, stories, and traditional meals prepared by your nomad team. The expedition culminates at the legendary dunes of Erg Chigaga before returning through Lake Iriki, Ouarzazate, and Berber artisan villages—leaving you with a deep connection to the land, its people, and a style of travel that respects and supports the fragile desert environment.

Guided desert trekking with local nomads and camel support – Scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains and Draa Valley.

Day 1: Agadir – Taliouine – Agdz

Your eco-adventure begins with a scenic drive toward the Anti-Atlas mountains. We stop in Taliouine, the saffron capital, to learn about sustainable agriculture in the region. We continue to Agdz, the gateway to the Daraa Valley, where the landscape transforms into lush palm groves and ancient clay Kasbahs.

Day 2: Agdz – Daraa Valley – M’hamid (The Desert Gate)

Today we follow the winding Daraa Valley, driving through millions of date palms and stopping to explore hidden mud-brick villages. We reach the village of M’hamid, where the road ends and the true Sahara begins. Here, you meet your local nomad team and the camel caravan that will be your companions for the next few days.

Day 3: Trekking with Nomads – The First Footsteps

We begin our Sahara trekking experience at a gentle pace. Leaving all engine noise behind, we walk alongside our nomads and camels. This day is about finding your rhythm in the desert. We cross small dunes and tamarisk forests, learning how the nomads find their way across the sand.

Day 4: Trekking with Nomads – Deep Desert Immersion

Today, the trekking route leads us deeper into the wild Sahara. We explore fossil-rich plains and shifting sand ridges. Your guides will share their ancestral knowledge, showing you how to bake “sand bread” and identify desert plants used for medicine. This is a true eco-tourism experience, moving through the land without leaving a trace.

Day 5: Trekking with Nomads – Reaching the Great Dunes

Our final full day of trekking brings us toward the spectacular landscape of the high dunes. The horizon is filled with golden sand peaks as we approach the legendary Erg Chigaga area. We celebrate the completion of our walking journey with a traditional nomadic feast and music around the campfire.

Day 6: Erg Chigaga – Lake Iriki – Ouarzazate

After a final desert sunrise, we transition to our 4×4 for a responsible off-road transfer across the vast, dry Lake Iriki. We head north toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Door of the Desert.” We stop to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified village that showcases Morocco’s incredible earthen architecture.

Day 7: Ouarzazate – Taznakht – Taroudant – Agadir

On our final day, we head west toward the mountains. We stop in Taznakht to visit the local women’s weaving cooperatives, supporting the sustainable craft of Berber carpets. We then pass through Taroudant, often called “Little Marrakech,” with its beautiful red city walls. We arrive back in Agadir in the late afternoon, completing your soulful journey.
